Georges-Hanna Sabbagh was born in 1877 in Alexandria. He studied art in Paris with Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier, at Ranson Academy. He loved to travel and was particularly fond of Brittany and Egypt. He first came to Crozant in 1922, one of the last years when Creuse landscape painting was still prosperous. He returned here once a year for ten years and painted about one hundred oil paintings: landscapes, portraits and still-lifes... His very personal style was marked with emotion and sobriety, free from the influence of Guillaumin and his followers. One of his paintings can be seen at Crozant town hall. Others are on display in museums such as Centre Pompidou and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and Le Havre museum.
Georges Sabbagh’s son Pierre became famous by participating in the first steps of French television : he was France’s first television newscaster, in 1949.
